How this worksheet works
From roof area to whole sheets
Sheet count is a planning quantity based on total area. It cannot replace a panel layout that accounts for framing direction, staggered joints, edge support, and cuts.
How to use it
- Enter the roof area to be sheathed.
- Set waste and actual sheet length and width.
- Calculate whole sheets, then develop a framing-aware layout before ordering.
Useful for
- Initial plywood or OSB takeoffs
- Comparing sheet formats
- Planning replacement decking allowances
Assumptions
- Entered area represents surfaces receiving new sheathing
- Sheet dimensions are actual planning dimensions
- Waste covers cuts and incidental loss only
Limitations
- Does not locate rafters, trusses, clips, blocking, or joints
- Does not select span rating, thickness, grade, or fastening
- Irregular layouts may need substantially different waste

Questions about this calculator
How many square feet is a 4 × 8 sheet?
A nominal 4-by-8-foot sheet covers 32 square feet before cuts and layout losses.
Does this calculator account for staggered joints?
No. It estimates quantity by area; a panel layout must confirm joint placement and support.
